Classic Mac Collection

In the years since I began using computers, I have collected many of them, mostly Apple Macintoshes. This series is going to showcase my collection and share some Apple history along the way.
In the late 80s I started using PCs and learned DOS, Basic and Autocad. Those early PCs ran on DOS on a 5-1/2” floppy disc, and had no hard drive and about a megabyte of RAM. Back then only Macintoshes had a GUI (graphical user interface). The first four highlighted here are from the mid ‘80s to the mid ‘90s.

Number one in my collection is a Mac Plus from 1987. It runs old System 6 on a floppy disc and features a built-in SCSI port and 1MB of RAM. These early Macs ran on the 68000 processors.

Next is a more usable Mac Classic from 1991 featuring a 20 MB hard drive and 4 MB of RAM. This model is the same as the one in my graphic design course at Sawyer College, the first Mac I ever used. I learned Aldus Pagemaker and Adobe Illustrator on it.

After graduating from Sawyer I bought my first computer, the Apple Quadra 700, shown here. It featured a powerful 68040 processor, a 240 MB hard drive and 20 MB of RAM. I later upgraded it with a PowerPC processor upgrade card, a much larger hard drive and 168 MB of RAM. The Quadra 700 was featured on Nedry’s desk in Jurassic Park as seen below.

In the mid ‘90s Apple transitioned the Macintosh line to the PowerPC processors. The fourth Mac shown above is a Performa 6400 featuring a PowerPC 603e chip, upgraded to Mac OS 9.2; and an add-in card to provide USB and Firewire ports.

Next week: 1995–2005.

Foundations of Big Bang Cosmology

The Big Bang model of cosmology rests on two key ideas that date back to the early 20th century: General Relativity and the Cosmological Principle. By assuming that the matter in the universe is distributed uniformly on the largest scales, one can use General Relativity to compute the corresponding gravitational effects of that matter.
